Welcome to the Course!

Nonprofit compliance laws are put in place on the state and federal level to protect the public and ensure nonprofit organizations do not abuse their financial advantages. The most notable advantages include exemption from federal and state taxes, and access to grants.

About the Course

This course presents state and federal compliance information that most nonprofit organizations must abide by. The information presented in this course is also non-inclusive. This means that there are many rules and regulations for nonprofit organizations, and while this course covers a lot of information, it does not cover every rule, regulation or law for nonprofit exempt organizations . We recommend that you refer to the Model Nonprofit Corporation Act, the IRS Exempt Organizations Division, your Secretary of State or Attorney General, and/or professional experts (Attorneys, CPAs, and/or Nonprofit Consultants) for additional information and guidance on nonprofit rules and regulations.

For example, the IRS provides guidance on applying for tax-exemption, and how to stay exempt. In addition, most states have a state level Nonprofit Corporations Act that nonprofit corporations must abide by, if operating within the state. Arizona, Georgia, Florida, Michigan, Minnesota, South Carolina, Texas, and Washington, are just a few of the states that have their own nonprofit corporations act. Check with your state to view the laws for nonprofits.

Intended Audience

This course is designed to inform pre-startup, newly formed, and small to mid sized nonprofits of common legal requirements that are imposed by federal and state governments. Suitable for all levels of experience.

Outcomes

Course participants should be able to:

  • Understand many nonprofit legal terms
  • Identify common 501(c)(3) prohibited activities
  • Describe which IRS 990 form should be submitted based on revenue
  • Define Charitable Registration

At the conclusion of this course, it is our sincere hope that you feel inspired to lead the organization that you’ve always dreamed that you would one day lead. You have everything it takes to succeed. This course is just your reminder! 🙂
